M. Gulam Hussain recently gave an invited keynote address in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Organized by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Forum (BFRF), Hussain’s seminar, titled “Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Development: Country Needs and Sectoral Priorities,” was held at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council in Farmgate, Dhaka.
Approximately 100 people gathered to hear the lecture. Attendees included university professors who specialize in aquaculture and fisheries, scientists from fisheries research institutes, and representatives from governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations.
In the lecture, Hussain addressed the importance of fisheries and aquaculture, present trends and scenarios in production, contributions of major fish species, the concept of “blue economy” and the opportunities and challenges of mariculture and marine fisheries, opportunities and challenges related to marine biotechnology, and sectoral strategies and priorities of the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100.
For this talk, Hussain also received a Crest of Honor, presented by the BFRF President Nowsad Alam and Kabrir Ikramul Haque, BFRF General Secretary and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council.
“I feel greatly honored for this presentation in a national seminar related to my professional discipline,” said Hussain about the recognition and award.
Currently the Asia Regional Coordinator for the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Fish, Hussain is the former Director General of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute. He also recently was involved as the Fisheries and Aquaculture Expert of the European Union–Bangladesh (EU-BGD) joint collaboration on Blue Economy in Bangladesh under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh. He holds a PhD in aquaculture genetics from the University of Stirling in Stirling, Scotland.
